Floor Levelers
Product Guide
For more information, see the Product Selection Guide.
Suggestions for form floor levelers include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Self-leveling underlayments from Symons are all cement-based materials, allowing the products to be applied in thicknesses down to 1/16". Cement-based underlayments are also more resistant to moisture-related deterioration than gypsum-based products.
- The underlayments from Symons are designed for interior use and are not designed to be used as a wearing surface in a heavy-duty industrial application. For information on a self-leveling wearing surface, refer to Concrete Top HD.
- Removal of unsound concrete and proper surface preparation is critical. The self-leveling underlayment will not make up for, or even perform over, a poor job of surface preparation.
- If the concrete base for the underlayment is sound and no concrete removal is necessary, then all dirt, oil, grease, curing compounds, paint coatings and any other surface contaminants must be removed.
- Methods for cleaning include shotblasting, sandblasting, waterblasting [minimum of 1500 to 2000 psi (10.3 - 13.8 MPa) pressure], scarifying and chemical cleaning. Grinding is not typically recommended because it may make the concrete smooth and polished, thus reducing the bond with the underlayment material.
- Patch all wide cracks and areas where deteriorated concrete was removed. We recommend Fast Set 20 or DOT Patch as the repair material.
- Priming the surface is required. For superior bonding and performance, we recommend applying undiluted Sure Bond bonding agent.
- For thick applications (over ½" or 1.3 cm thick), we recommend extending the underlayment with 15 lbs. (6.8 kg) of 1/8" (0.3 cm) course sand for each 50 lb. (2.27 kg) bag. Always thoroughly mix the underlayment product first with water, then add the coarse sand for extension. The coarse sand must be dry.
- For larger projects, consider using a pump with a mixer. We recommend Chem Grout or similar pump/mixer combinations.
- Do not trowel the finished surface of underlayments - the product is designed to be self-leveling and should not be altered. (This does not apply to the Magic Finish product.)
- Do not use any curing compounds.
- Do not apply in temperatures lower than 40°F (4°C).
- For applications in hot weather above 85°F (29°C), attempt to work in a shaded area, and use cold water for mixing. Hot weather will decrease the working time with the self-leveling underlayments.
- For applications over wood floors or other non-concrete surfaces, consult Technical Service at 877-854-0643 (toll-free, US) or 913-279-4806 (fax).
